Set Aside for Us

It’s a holiday week! As usual, there’s so much to do. But, also as usual, our regular schedules get turned on their heads. Workdays become days off so we can work at cleaning random areas no one looks at in our houses. We shop for foods we don’t typically buy, cook with the big pots (and all the small ones), shop again at the last minute for the things we forgot the first three times we went to the store…

Sometimes we do it all. Sometimes we’re lucky enough to just do parts of the above and feel grateful to the hosts of the holidays for doing all the rest.

Sometimes--I’ve had these years, too—we have nowhere to go. So we put together a Friendsgiving, or we crash dinner at the home of a family friend, or just spend time on our own.

I’ve done it all. And I didn’t mind any of these scenarios. The thing is, holidays break us out of our daily grind, out of our autopilot. This, all in itself, is a gift.

So no matter what kind of holiday (or working holiday) we each have planned this week, let’s agree to give it the kind of perspective change that a day set aside for us would deserve. These are the times when magic happens.
